Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary
The Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DWNP) established Kuala Gandah Elephant Conservation Centre in 1989. The centre is the base for the Elephant Relocation Team, which began the Elephant translocation programme in 1974. The only one of its kind in Malaysia, the team is dedicated to locating, subduing and translocating elephant from areas where their habitats throughout the Peninsular such as Taman Negara. Over the years our team has help to prevent the further decline of the elephant population by relocating more than 600 wild elephants.

Beside being the base for the translocation team and home for a number of residents and orphaned elephants, Kuala Gandah also aims to promote public awareness of the elephant’s plight in Malaysia and to support research into elephants translocation and conservation. The centre also strive to educate the public about the importance of habitat and environmental preservation. Visitors are encouraged to view a video on elephant translocation.

Taman Negara, translating to “National Park” in English, is recognized as one of the world’s oldest rainforests, with a history spanning 130 million years. New species continue to be discovered. This forest has many plant species, including rattans, palms, mosses, fungi, ferns, lichens, gingers, orchids, and parasites.

Visitors can try many activities, such as jungle trekking, canopy walks, rapid shooting, swimming, cave exploration, fishing, mountain climbing, bird watching, night jungle walks, and night safaris.

The park is also home to the Batek (Bateq) people, one of the Negrito tribes who live a semi-traditional life in Taman Negara. About 500 Orang Asli live in the park at any one time. Visitors can visit their communities with a recognized guide.

Taman Negara is about a 3-hour drive from Kuala Lumpur to Jerantut, the nearest town. From Jerantut, it’s about an hour’s journey to Kuala Tahan or a three-hour boat trip upriver from Kuala Tembeling Jetty.

There is a total of 272 steps leading up to the top of the main cave temple. It consists of three big cave. The world’s tallest Lord Muruga Statue with the height of 42.7m (130 feet high) is located here. This destination attracts a huge crowd during Thaipusam, which is an annual festival for the Indians to pay homage to Lord Muruga. This festival will be celebrated in January or February of every year. This mother nature attraction is the most visited tourist destination.

Our last stop is to see fireflies by night at Kampung Pasir Penambang. It is a small agricultural village and is widely known for its large firefly colonies. While enjoying a pleasant boat ride in the Selangor River, its noted the fireflies consistently patronized the serenity of the mangrove areas.
